Consumer Protection
Licensed, Bonded and Insured. You hear this all the time, but licensing, bonds and insurance are important and they protect you, the consumer.
Navona Development Corp is an established and registered corporation within the province of Alberta and the municipalities with which it serves. There are checks and balances which have been implemented in Alberta to ensure homeowners’ interests are protected when undergoing residential improvements or construction. Navona ensures that it conforms to all of these on an annual basis, keeping updated licenses, current bonds and applicable insurance.
It is important, to you the consumer, that during your selection process for your renovation or new home construction contractor, that you do due diligence on all of your construction candidates; confirm licensing and asked for ask for proof of bonding and insurance. In residential construction the stakes are high – a lot of time and money is involved – reduce your risk and protect yourself and your investment, don’t become a renovation or new construction nightmare story.
Licenses Navona carries an Alberta Pre-Paid Contractors license. This license allows a contractor to collect deposits and progress payments. This license requires of background check of the company principals, examination and approval of contract documents to ensure the company conforms to the Fair Trade Act. Annual proof of bonding is also required to maintain this license. See Services Alberta for more information .
Navona also carries a City of Calgary Contractors license. This is required for all contractors to pull permits on behalf of their customers. Navona also carries licenses for the surrounding municipalities which it works within, including MD of Foothills, Town of Okotoks and others.
Navona also performs checks on all of its sub-trades to ensure that they too carry the appropriate licenses and tickets for the municipalities which they are working in.
It is illegal for a contractor to collect deposits or progress payments if they do not have an Alberta Pre-Paid Contractors license. Also beware of contractors who ask you to pull a homeowner’s building permit for work they will perform, they are likely not licensed in your municipality.
Bonds Navona maintains a General Surety Bond.
A bond is for your protection against poor business practices and closure or bankruptcy of a company. You are able to call on the contractor's bond to reclaim monies lost or for removing liens placed on your home placed by your contractor’s sub-contractors (in the event they are not paid). In order to obtain a bond, a company or its principals must put up cash and/or property as collateral in order to recover the monies owed to a claimant.
It is illegal for a contractor to take deposits in advance of doing work unless they are bonded. Never give money in advance of work done to a contractor who is not legally bonded. It is also wise to ensure no liens have been registered on your home prior to paying the final deposit for work performed.
Insurance Navona is fully insured and carries liability insurance as well as individual construction policies for larger renovations and new home construction.
Navona also carries WCB (Works’ Compensation) for all its employees and ensures all subtrades also are covered under WCB caverage.
