Home Improvement Tip #5
Basements don't have to be scary
Make it disappear and increase your living space.
For whatever reason basements have gotten a bad rap. New homes rarely come with one developed and when you calculate your homes square footage the basement is omitted. Like it isn’t a living space.
Why not build a theatre room and workout area, add some extra storage space, another bedroom and bathroom? Sounds like living space, doesn’t it.

Take the Basement Quiz: Do I need to develop my basement?
- When I tell my kids to play in the basement they ask me what they did wrong.
- There’s a funny smell down there that really isn’t funny.
- Seriously, the cat blatantly refuses to use the basement litter box.
- I don’t love the basement improvement we started years ago; and it isn’t even finished.
- I’d like to save my kids from hemorrhoids resulting from playing on cold concrete.
- I’d like a safe place to store my recalcitrant teenager until he/she goes off to college.
- I know it’s down there in the maze of moving boxes but I can’t risk becoming trapped.
- I’m not a fan of concrete as a floor covering.
- I don’t find exposed floor joists and open ventilation runs rustic or appealing.
- There’s a distinct possibility that there are squatters in our basement.
If you answered YES to any of these questions you probably need to develop your basement.
